Eleoussa or, as named by the Italians “Campochiaro”, was a model village built c. 1935 to host a few hundred 'settlers' from Northern Italy during the Italian occupation (1912 – 1947).
The war, and then the German occupation, did the rest. Most settlers left between 1940 and 1943; a few remained until 1947, when Rhodes was united with Greece and Campochiaro was given its present name, Eleoussa.
You will see old Italian public buildings, a sanatorium and an aqueduct.
The village's old square is like a Fellini film scenery. Explore the abandoned buildings. You can make some interesting photos.
