The Archaeological Museum of Symi, located in the neighborhood of Agios Athanasios in Chorio, extends over three levels, including two mansions of the 18th and the 19th century, the Farmakidis House, and the Chatziagapitos Hall with their courtyards and gardens. The multi-level exhibition takes the visitor on a visual journey spanning from the distant past to the island’s Modern history, as presented through objects from Prehistory until the 19th century.
This museum may be small but is very interesting and gives a clear view of the history and the traditions of Simi island.
THE WAY FROM YIALOS (HARBOUR) TO THE MUSEUM & BACK
From Skala Square on the harbour, climb the broad steps of the Kali Strata. Follow signs to the town’s museum, through a series of alleyways. You’ll eventually find your way to the Archaeological Museum and the Symi Folklore Museum, which are side by side.
Your uphill walk will last 20 minutes. It is beautiful, but during the summer months it can be very warm.
Alternatively, take a TAXI or a BUS from the harbour to Chorio (8 min), and then follow the signs walk to the Museum. Click on the links for details on taxis and buses. Your walk will last less than 10 minutes.
After your visit to the Museum (not less than 60 minutes), visit the Castle (650m or 10 minutes from the Museum) for the stanning view, and have a coffe or lunch at Chorio before walking down the Kali Strata to Yialos.
Your walk back to the harbour will be all downhill, much easier, and will last 20 minutes from the Museum, 15 from the Castle, or 10 from the restaurants.
Make sure you are back on time for your ferry's departure.
