The five-hectare site, adjacent to the Palace, has been transformed into an open, accessible museum of successive historical periods, connecting the Hellenistic, Roman, Medieval and Ottoman history of the city.
The site serves as a vivid timeline of Rhodes’ long history and its pivotal role as a maritime trade hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Hellenistic Ship Sheds, the Medieval Gardens of the Palace of the Grand Master, and the open-air sculpture gallery have been organically integrated into the "Pervola" (The Big Garden). 
Within this area survive sections of the monumental Roman Cardo street with its colonnades and shops, the imposing Tetrapylon, the mint of the Knights of St John, as well as remains from the Ottoman and Italian periods.
In essence, it represents a microcosm of the history of Rhodes.
