ACROPOLIS of Lindos [112]

The Acropolis is a very interesting and beautiful place to visit. The feeling when on the top and the view are worth the (almost) 15 minute steep climb.

The ascent follows the same steep path as in antiquity and the visitor is greeted by the stern of an ancient Rhodian warship carved on the rock. The medieval castle's walls follow the natural terrain and enclose the entire surface of the hill.

One can take the less steep (longer) path used by the donkeys that carry some of the visitors to the top. Walking on this path will last approx. 25 min.

Try to visit during the least busy and hot hours (after 15:00). The time just before sunset is the best. There are two "paths" you can take (south or north).

REMEMBER: Lindos is officially the hottest place in Greece. Please have a bottle of water with you and don't wear flip-flops. The rock steps can be very slippery on the way down.

If you don't feel like walking, you can ride on a "Lindos Taxi" back: a donkey. Not a very comfortable choice (both for humans and animals).

Lindos was founded by the Dorians led by the king Tlepolemus of Rhodes, who arrived in about the 10th century BC. It was one of six Dorian cities in the area known as the Dorian Hexapolis. The eastern location of Rhodes made it a natural meeting place between the Greeks and the Phoenicians, and by the 8th century Lindos was a major trading centre. Its importance declined after the foundation of the city of Rhodes in the late 5th century.

In classical times the acropolis of Lindos was dominated by the massive temple of Athena Lindia, which attained its final form in around 300 BC. In Hellenistic and Roman times the temple precinct grew as more buildings were added. In early medieval times these buildings fell into disuse, and in the 14th century they were partly overlaid by a massive fortress built on the acropolis by the Knights of St John to defend the island against the Ottomans.

Please note that Lindos is officially the warmest place in Greece.

We suggest that from June 1 to September 30 you visit the village and the Acropolis after 17:00.

During the not-so-hot months, you can start your day by visiting Lindos and then drive to other places on the island.

► Avoid Lindos when cruise ships' passengers are there. They usually are gone by 14:00. Ask us for detailed days and hours.

After an afternoon or evening visit to the Acropolis, MELENOS with its lovely view is a great place to have dinner. It is on your way down, following the northern path.
